In this case, I believe that Dennet is wherever he thinks he is after he has undergone the first operation but before Hamlet had been destroyed on the mission. But prior to this mission, however, I think that he himself believes that he is wherever his original body is, which would be where Hamlet is. If a person is able to switch bodies with another person but still remain with the same brain, then it cannot be the body itself that makes that person carry on the switch. In Dennet’s case, his original body is controlled by his brain which is in a vat. However, he is able to stare at this brain, Yorick, and I do not think he believes he is inside the vat because clearly he is standing right outside it staring at his brain. According to Locke, personal identity is based on consciousness and that only oneself can be aware of his consciousness. Therefore, Dennet is wherever he thinks he is, based on his conscious. According to this statement, I believe that it is quite acceptable for the idea that if you switched bodies with someone else while still
