Dharmar 1 Logesh Dharmar Literary Explorations II February 21, 2006 Heart of Darkness’ Relation to Modern Society Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad can clearly speak to a modern crowd. The problems and situations faced by people a hundred years ago are also present in modern society. One issue that was present in Heart of Darkness was imperialism. We don’t have countries trying to colonize other countries anymore, but monopolies, which are similar to imperialistic countries, are present in business. Greed is an overpowering force in modern society, which leads to the exploitation of the working class. These issues are present in a modern society. In Heart of Darkness , Belgium had control of the Congo and uses workers to squeeze all the profit they can from the country. Similarly, many European countries had control over different parts of Africa to improve their economy. The same tactic is used by many businesses today. For example, computer giants Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft are all buying popular web domains to increase traffic towards their own sites. They
