Luke Wyatt Experiment 102 12/02/07 Experiment 102: Series and Parallel Combinations of (a) Resistors and (b) capacitors (a) Resistance Risk Assessment The Experiment had a very low risk as it only relies on an electrical circuit. Therefore the only risk in this experiment is as stated below 1. Electrical risk – As the circuit is electrical Experiment Aim The aim of the experiment is to measure the resistance of the various circuits where a set of known resistances are combined in parallel, series, or a combination of the two and compare these values with the resistance calculated using ohms law, to prove if the laws are valid. Luke Wyatt Experiment 102 12/02/07 Theory Theory tells us that when resistors are arranged in series, then the total resistance of the series combination, t R , is given by 3 2 1 R R R R t + + = (1) for three resistors in the combination. The rule can be applied, by appropriate modification, to any number of resistors in the series combination. If the resistors are arranged in parallel, then the total resistance of the parallel combination is given by 3 2 1 1 1 1 1 R R R R t + + = (2) for the resistors in parallel combination.
