Luke Wyatt Experiment 13 27/9/06 Experiment 13: The melting point of naphthalene by Thermocouple Risk Assessment The Experiment had a few safety issues that had to be addressed before starting. These are all low risk hazards and are as follows 1. Electrical – As mains electricity is used in the experiment 2. Thermal – As boiling water and naked flames are used Experiment Aim The aim of the experiment was to measure accurately the rate at which naphthalene cools in air and to investigate the relationship between the time and the recorded values. Luke Wyatt Experiment 13 27/9/06 Theory On the copper-constantan thermocouple centigrade scale, the temperature θ c is defined by the relation θ c = E θ - E 0 E 100 - Where E θ , E 100 and E 0 are the respective e.m.fs of the thermocouple at the temperature θ c and the upper and lower fixed points. The current I, flowing in the meter is proportional to the thermocouple e.m.f. E, if the total resistance in the circuit remains constant during the experiment. So if I θ ,I 100 , and I 0 are the respective currents at temperature and the upper and lower fixed points, then, from above θ c = I θ - I 0 I 100 - 3of 7 X 100 ° C E 0 X 100 ° C I 0
