Gu Chun, more commonly know as Gu Taiqing is regarded as one of the most revered female and Manchu poets. She was born in 1799 to a well off but seemingly declining family during the Qing Dynasty. The majority of Gu Taiqing poetry is written in the form of lyrical prose or Shi poetry. I/ Written to the melody of "River Town Plum Blossom Intro" Gu Taiqing poem "On a Rainy Day Receiving a Letter from Yingjian" documents her experience of receiving a letter from her friend whom had traveled South of the Yangzi River in times prior. Her poem expresses both her passionate love for _ .,„ , ,„./. .-.,, , . . , her friend as well as her concerns and fears of what ill news the letter may soon reveal. ^ In the first several lines of Gu Taiqing's poem "On a Rainy Day Receiving a Letter from Yingjian" she adamantly shows her anxious state of mind and uncertainty by use of the stylistic device of oxymorons. In one of the first lines Gu Taiqing contrastingly states "Hurry up and open it!" "Open it slowly." How can one
