What is Rhetoric? Definition today: define what it is today…end of the class I. What it is not: II. What Rhetoric Is: Donald Bryant  “Rhetoric does, rather than is.”  About doing. How to do. Rhetoric bound by time. Created to exist in a specific time, to influence something  specific at a specific time. Utilitarian aspect to it. May not have floors of books on it – that’s not it’s purpose. Kuypers: For this class:  Rhetoric is the strategic use of  communication, oral or written, to achieve  specifiable goals.  two parts: strategic and goals Strategic:  intention behind words. Not done in solitude. Done deliberately. Purposeful.  Intentional  based on probability, not scientific certainty. R takes into account the  uncertainty of humanity/living, the illogical. PROBABILITY BASED Contingent   matters that have yet to be decided. What happens is contingent upon what is  said.
