Due in class: 7 October, Wednesday; three full pages. 15%. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Two “Tower of Babel” stories from the Ancient Near East. Reading: (1) Genesis 11:1-9. (2) “Epic of Creation” in the textbook by S. Dalley, Myths from Mesopotamia . Pp. 259, 262-263 (see Blackboard file for these three pages). You are to write a descriptive and comparative analysis of two different stories about the so-called “Tower of Babel” (= Ziggurat of Babylon). One story is in Genesis 11:1-9, the other is in the Babylonian text called the Enuma Elish (= Epic of Creation ) in your Dalley textbook (pp. 228-277). The point of this research and writing exercise is to isolate and identify the similarities and differences between the two stories. Some unfamiliar terms and concepts in the Babylonian story: “Apsu” = primeval world ocean; “shrine” =temple =zigurrat; “Esagila” =zigurrat
