Week SIX Primary Questions 1) How is the freeway and suburban development linked? As rail lines began to radiate from the city, suburbs began to spring up. These rail lines remained the primary source of transportation until after World War II. After World War II, the automobiles succeeded the rail lines as the primary source of transportation chosen by Americans. As more cars hit the roads, bigger and faster routes were thought to be needed. As these freeways stretched even further out around the cities new and bigger suburbs were established. 2) Was the freeway the death of the downtown and walk able city? No, it seems the automobile was the death of the walk able city. 3) Should urban freeways be removed? (additional web reading) The examples in the reading only included damaged or unfinished roads or freeways. In those cases. Yes I agree they should be removed. I don’t think freeways such as I80, or I30, or 635 and 820 (loops around the DFW are) should be removed. The removal would increase my drive times tremendously.
