1. What is the difference between Basic and Non-basic economic activity? And which type of economic activity is more beneficial to a city? Basic economic activity is money brought into the city from the surrounding country side that it serves. Non basic economic activity is the distribution and exchanging inside the city of monies brought in by the basic activity. Basic economic activity is more beneficial to a city because without it you can’t have non basic activity. 2. What is gentrification and how does it usually occur? Gentrification is a general term for the arrival of wealthier people in an existing poorer urban area. There is a related increase in rents and property values and a change in the areas character and culture. Gentrification tends to occur in areas that have particular desirable qualities. There has been a renewed interest in “City Life”. The convenience, diversity, and liveliness of urban neighborhoods are major attractions as is the availability of cheap housing especially if the buildings are unique and interesting. Old houses or industrial buildings often attract people looking for "fixer-uppers" as investment opportunities. 3. What is Time-Space convergence? And give an example that is relevant to urban geography. Space time convergence states that although distances of places stay constant the time it takes to travel to these places increasingly diminishes because of technological or developmental factors.
