African American Literature August 3, 2010 James Baldwin (August 2, 1924 – November 30, 1987) Thesis: James Baldwin’s work focused on questions of sexual, racial, and social identity and placed importance into the need for black families. A. Baldwin depicted issues of blacks in America and how they dealt with these issues. He provided insight to the psychology of a black man in America during his time dealing with a number of events and his family. B. “It was disenchanted, and in this, also, lay the authority of their curses.” ( J. Baldwin, Sonny’s Blues , p. 477) C. Baldwin’s work landed him on the cover of Time Magazine in 1963 as well as made him a spokes person through the troubled times of the civil rights movement. D. James Baldwin - Childhood Education & Encouragement is a 2 minute 41 second video briefly outlining Baldwin’s life and career and ends with a meaningful speech which gives insight into the energy of which provides his inspiration. E.
