Factors Related to Attraction Propinquity Refers to geographic closeness You will tend to be attracted to those you are around most often, and less attracted to those you are around less often (all other forces being equal). Strongest predictor of romantic attachment within organizations. Similarity Research supports the idea that similarity increases attraction. Thus, birds of a feather flock together (BOF effect). 3 qualifications to BOF effect Perceived similarity does not equal actual similarity You overestimate how similar you are to attractive people, you underestimate how similar you are to unattractive people. Only applies if it is a quality you like about yourself. Different types of similarities influence attraction Neimeyer and Mitchell Described three basic types of similarity: attitude (tastes and preferences), personality, value Findings of Neimeyer and Mitchell Examined initial attraction and long-term attraction Attitude similarity was best predictor of initial attraction. Personality and value similarity were best predictors of long-term attraction and relational
