Chapter 17 Notes Conquering the West Emergence of the Ghost Dance. Press began to write about the dangerous Sioux. Sitting Bull should have been arrested. Big Foot another Sioux worried and led his people into the wilderness. Big Foot had to surrender to the Seventh Cavalry. Arrived at Wounded Knee. The Westward Experiment Massive transfer to the West. 190 million acres of cultivated land. Most settled in California or Oregon. Planned to establish farms, most of the new immigrants were fairly prosperous. Movement depended on economy and the railroads. New states emerge. The Homestead Act of 1862 In 1862, the Homestead Act allowed 1862 acres by paying a fee of $10.00, people had to stay on the property for five years. Government thought. Some small farmers emerged in terms of the farms. Also large tracts of land were being bought. 160 acres were too small, farmers needed more. The Railroad and Western Expansion Pacific Railroad Act pledged that a railroad would be built from the East to the West. Land and cash loans were provided to the company that was the one to build the first railroad. In May 1869 the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific Jupiter met at Promontory Point. The Assault on Native-American Cultures Native-Americans—250,000 were the Eastern tribes and included the Cherokee Native-Americans thought that there was an encroachment. There was an attempt at peace with the Treaty of Medicine Lodge, included the Southern Plains agreed to relocate from the white settlement where they were living onto a reservation on Oklahoma. The government promised to give supplies and provide for schools for the next 30 years. A second treaty was signed as the Treaty of Fort Laramie, agreed to remain in South Dakota, included in the Black Hills. US Army forced the Native-Americans onto the reservations, Custer and
