The main purpose of this experiment is to verify experimentally that colligative properties depend on the number of solute particles and not on the solute’s identity. Another principle of this laboratory is to perform a detailed analysis of the freezing point depression of cyclohexane. Ice Cyclohexane Naphthalene Unknown solute Procedure In Part A of the experiment, a Styrofoam cup was half-filled with ice. The initial temperature of the ice was recorded. 1.8 g of urea was added to the cup, and was stirred until it dissolved. The final, lowest temperature of the mixture was recorded. This same process was repeated with 5.4 g of glucose and again with 0.9 g of sodium chloride. In Part B of the experiment, a clean, dry 200-mm test tube was placed in a 400-mL beaker. The mass was recorded. Afterwards, the density of cyclohexane (0.7739 g/mL) was used to estimate the volume required for about 10 grams of cyclohexane. This volume was then poured into the test tube.
