HW 1 S10 Modern Physics due at lecture 1/29 This is not group work! Problem 1: Michelson-Morley Experiment Sketch the setup of the Michelson-Morley experiment. Consider the supposed change of direction of the flowing ether. Explain in a suitable geometric diagram for orientations of the ether flow at 0°, 45° and 90° relative to one light beam the different optical path lengths the rays would traverse. Problem 2: Interference: Use the graphical method from the take home assignment of last week to predict the interference pattern you would get for a 3-slit experiment where d 1 = 2[cm] and d 2 = 3 [cm] and all other parameters are the same as in the take home assignment. Problem 3 Lorentz Transformation Observer O’ has a velocity of 0.85c relative to observer O. Clocks are adjusted such that t=t’=0 when x=x’=0. If O determines that a flashbulb goes off at x=50 [m] and t = 2* 10 -7 [s], what is the time of this event as measured by O’? How does the answer change, if O’ would instead have been moving with 0.95c?
