POT3302 – Political Ideologies Notes – 03/24/2009 SOCIALISM Bakunin – “anarcho-syndicalism” What is the essence of socialism? What is its main value? - Equality Families of Socialism: Utopian socialists: stemmed from Utopia by Sir Thomas Moore; sought to transform economic situation peacefully. “Ludites” - loved to destroy machinery because machines replaced man Trade Union movement: sought to reform the system from within without toppling the entire system; they would use strikes; formed by workers. - All other families of socialism looked to the trade union movement for their strength. “Anarcho-syndicalists” – against the nation-state; believed nation-state was just an illusion used to divide the masses. Their goal was to create small communities of individuals, a confederation of working people. Workers councils would have their own decentralized government. They were associated with violence: they were enamored by the idea of revolution, a struggle was a good thing because it created a new, better man. Marx provided a coherent theory for socialism. Marx somehow influences all socialism,
