POT3302 – Political Ideologies Notes – March 31 st , 2009 Marxism and Ethics - The end justifies the means; as long as the revolution succeeds, it does not matter how it was achieved. Marxism was either completely true, or completely false. If it were true, then society would have to be completely rebuilt based on Marx’s idea. Vanguard – “tip of the sword” Lenin wanted a group of professional vanguards that had to be organized into a political party like no other political party. This party, instead of seeking to establish a political order, sought to control the order and be the dominant party in order to restructure society. This political party would be a party for the taking of power for its exclusive use and its reorganization of all society. It would not be organized along the lines of traditional political parties; rather, it would be organized along military lines. It would have strict military discipline that would mean that the party was in a sense an army waging political war. The party would be a state within a state, that is the party of
