Supporting a Position 3 I believe that the United States should continue to use capital punishment. Capital Punishment, or the death penalty, is how the government responds to crimes committed by a legally prosecuted and convicted person according to that states’ laws. People would argue that we do not have the right to take a life, thus preventing a murderer from ever killing again. They say that the death penalty constitutes “cruel and unusual punishment”. In the St. Petersburg Times article, Angel Diaz took more than twice the normal amount of time to die, and appeared to some witnesses to suffer during the process. While in the case of Jimmy Lee Gray (1983) in Mississippi, his lawyers argued that death by asphyxiation by cyanide gas induces heart attack in its victims constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. Unformatted text preview: sufficient to be deemed as cruel and unusual. What about the victims of these murderers? Did they not suffer horrific pain, humiliation, and death? Every victim has family, friends, co-workers and neighbors that are affected by their death. The loss to all is incalculable. The death penalty gives them some form of closure. It brings finality to a horrible chapter in their lives. The justice system shows more compassion for the murderer that he ever showed for his victim. We need to put the emphasis back on protecting the victims, and we need justice for Supporting a Position 4 them. Some victims have been waiting a long time. I know, some people say “it’s better to let a hundred criminals go free, rather than to kill one innocent person”. But with today’s forensics, it is getting easier to prove guilt, or innocence. And, what about those escaped prisoners? They are the ones who will kill again and again just to keep from getting caught....
