Unformatted text preview: Chapter 2 Country Differences Political Systems System of government in a nation Political systems can be assessed according to two dimensions: Collectivism versus Individualism Democratic versus Totalitarian Collectivism and Individualism Collectivism Collective goals are more important than individual goals and individual rights are sacrificed for the good of the majority. Individualism Individual economic and political freedoms are the ground rules on which society should be based. Som The belief that the state should own enterprises and run them for public good rather than private profit. Some sot systems focused on controlling the Commanding Heights of economies. Many countries have moved away from state-run enterprises through privatization. Democracy versus Totalitarianism Democracy Government is by the people, either directly or through elected representatives. Totalitarianism One person or party exercises absolute control over all spheres of life. There is often political repression, no free elections, free speech or basic civil liberties.
