Dr. Thurber “Soul Music” Report 8 March 2009 Babalu The piece I chose was “Babalu” by Desi Arnaz. While he is best known for his work as Ricky Ricardo on I Love Lucy in the 50s, he was also a very talented musician. Desi was born Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III in Cuba, on March 2 nd , 1917. His family was quite well-to-do, and his father served as the mayor of Santiago de Cuba, the city where Desi was born. Everything was going well for them, until one of Cuba’s many revolutions struck in 1933. Desi’s father was even imprisoned for a while before he fled to the United States. Desi followed a while later, and found his father in Miami. His mother, Dolores, joined them at a later date. Although Desi had been attending a university in Cuba, he went ahead and graduated from an American high school. He’d been working odd jobs for a while, and finally landed a spot in a night club, where he performed the Cuban classic “Babalu.” He had no idea at that point in his life that he would end up crooning that song many more times.
