Burns 1 Dr. Thurber Music Appreciation 2 June 2008 “Vultures” John Clayton Mayer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on October 16, 1977 to his mother, an English teacher, and his father, a high school principal. Mayer became fascinated with the guitar at an early age, and by age 13, his father rented one for him. Not long after that point, Mayer fell in love with the blues. Against his parents’ will, he became consumed with the guitar, and not with his studies, as he performed at several local blues bars and other neighboring areas during high school. At age 17, Mayer was incapacitated with cardiac arrhythmia, which sent him to the hospital for a few days, after which he wrote his first lyrics. He worked at a gas station until he saved enough money to purchase his first suitable guitar, a 1996 Stevie Ray Vaughn signature Stratocaster. At age 19, Mayer attended two semesters at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He then moved to Atlanta Georgia, with another musician, Clay Cook,

Unformatted text preview: and they eagerly started their musical career. However, Cook found it difficult to work with Mayer due to the fact that Mayer wanted to take the path of pop. The two band members parted their ways, and by 2000, John Mayer had made quite a name for himself. His latest album, Continuum , was released in September of 2006. The track Vultures from this album is one of my favorite songs. It emphasizes the fusion of blues and pop, and that theme is carried throughout the CD. John Mayer frequently uses the Burns 2 guitar and voice as his primary instruments. However, his songs are usually complemented with a keyboard, drums, or other source of percussion. I consider Vultures to be one of my favorite songs (although, I enjoy all of John Mayers music) because of its unique style, as well as his meaningful lyrics that portray perseverance....
