TOUPADAKIS Lecture 17 Chapter 17 Buffer Solutions • Aqueous solutions whose pH values change only very slightly on the addition of small amounts of either a strong acid or a strong base. • Two components are required, one acidic to neutralize the added base and one basic to neutralize the added acid. • The two components must not neutralize each other. • A buffer consists of relatively high concentrations of the components of a conjugate weak acid- weak base pair. --- A weak acid and it’s conjugate base. Example: HC 2 H 3 O 2 / C 2 H 3 O 2---- A weak base and it’s conjugate acid.
