Unformatted text preview: Synaptic Plasticity I: Synaptic Plasticity I: Learning and Memory Learning and Memory Dr. McKemy 9/21/09 Forms of Synaptic Plasticity Forms of Synaptic Plasticity Connections between neurons are a dynamic process. Changes in synaptic transmission is referred to as Synaptic Plasticity. Types: Synaptic Facilitation Rapid increase in synaptic strength that can last for tens of milliseconds. Two or more action potentials that occur within a few milliseconds. Synaptic Augmentation Similar to Facilitation but occurs over a few seconds Synaptic Potentiation Occurs over tens of seconds to minutes Synaptic Depression Decrease in synaptic strength. During sustained synaptic activity the amount of neurotransmitter released declines Synaptic facilitation Synaptic facilitation Occurs when two or more APs reach the nerve terminal within a few millisec. Results in prolonged Ca 2+ levels. Rates of Ca 2+ removal are slow. Ca 2+ builds up in the nerve terminal . Subsequent APs release more neurotransmitter. Synaptic facilitation Synaptic facilitation Interval between AP is important. Not clear how increased Ca 2+ leads to facilitation. Might possibly involve synaptotagmin. Synaptic Depression Synaptic Depression Depression is caused by a reduction in the amount neurotransmitter released....
