Unformatted text preview: Background: People who have had limbs amputated sometimes continue to feel “phantom” pain from the missing limbs even though it is not there. Researchers at the University of Manchester (in England) have developed a system using virtual reality (VR) to try to trick the brain into thinking the limb is still there, in hopes of lessening the pain. Amputees use headset displays and sensors to see themselves in a “virtual world” with all their limbs intact, and are able to control and move their missing limbs in the display they see. The studies described below are intended to determine the e f ectiveness of the VR system in reducing phantom limb pain. Assume each person is trained at the University of Manchester to use the VR system, and is then asked about the pain after a speci f ed period of time using the system. 1. Describe(a) the units.
