2 I. KIDNEY FUNCTION A. Eliminate waste products CO 2 , H 2 O, nitrogenous wastes B. Maintain levels of macronutrient ions Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl - , etc. 1) Special Functions: nerve impulses, muscle contraction, secretion 2) Osmoregulation: stabilizing osmotic pressure, blood pressure CONTROLLING FLUID CONSUMPTION MAIN FUNCTIONS OF KIDNEYS 1) Filtration 2) Excretion 3) Secretion 4) Reabsorption Figure 44.9 Figure 44.13

3 I. KIDNEY FUNCTION NEPHRON: functional unit of kidney, consisting of renal tubule & associated blood vessels (10 6 per kidney in humans) Kidneys receive the following: - 20% of blood pumped per heartbeat - process about 1500 liters per day - extract 180 liters filtrate per day - excrete 1.5 liters of urine per day • Nephron Fig. 44.14 II. NEPHRON STRUCTURE A. REABSORBTION Proximal Convoluted Tubule: reabsorbs 75% of NaCl and 70% of H 2 O Loop of Henle: absorbs more H 2 O & Na + from filtrate (>99% reabsorbed) ; Only in 20% of nephrons (juxtamedullary nephrons); only in birds and animals; 80% cortical nephrons Brush border membrane faces renal tubule; inc. area for uptake B. SECRETION H + and ammonia (NH 3 ) are secreted into renal tubule
