EE 115C, Winter 2010, Hw #6 (due 3/11/2010) Problem 1: (Wires) In the 0.25μm technology, wires of metal-5 are found to possess the follow- ing characteristics: (1) where W is the width of the wire in μm. Minimum length transistors in this technology have the following parameters: (2) a) An inverter of size W P = 70μm and W N = 140μm drives another (small) inverter as shown in Figure 1(a). The wire from A to B is 2.0μm wide metal-5 wire of length 7mm. Calculate the pull-down delay at node B. Hint: Use the lumped (π) RC wire model described in class. b) If Vin in Figure 1(a) is driven by a 10 MHz periodic signal, what is the dynamic power dissi- pation? c) Clearly, the 7mm wire significantly increases the delay. This situation is typical of global signals in large digital ICs e.g., nodes A and B could be at opposite ends of a large IC.
