Psychological Maltreatment History This is the least common form of abuse noted in statistics It was not recognized as a distinct form of abuse until recently Most often it was observed along with other more identifiable forms of abuse Although not immediately apparent, the long term effects are quite profound

Psychological Maltreatment Characteristics of Child Victims Reports of emotional abuse increase with the child’s age Ages 7-17 were more likely to experience verbal aggression Very little gender differences - it appears as though boys and girls are equally vulnerable A significant number of these abused children come from “mixed” racial backgrounds Lower income families tend to be more at risk due to external stressors
