Unformatted text preview: Ch8 HW1 (Homework) Arthur Barfield PHYS 2211, section M, Fall 2008 Instructor: Jennifer Curtis Web Assign Current Score: 40 out of 41 Due: Monday, October 27, 2008 09:00 AM EDT Description The point particle system. Reading: Sections 8.48.5. You may find it interesting to read the optional Sections 8.68.7 on friction. Instructions This assignment is a tutorial on the material in Chapter 8, to prepare you to do analyses of this kind on your own in later homework and tests. For that reason you have three submissions for each answer box (not just each question). In other words, you can submit just the first answer box up to three times and get feedback each time, then submit the second answer box up to three times, etc. The first problem is broken down into very small steps to help you get started. The second problem requires taking some of these steps yourself. In the third problem you need to take most of the steps on your own. The due date for this assignment is past. Your work can be viewed below, but no changes can be made. 1. [MI2 08.X.00] 1/1 points Read the instructions at the top of this assignment. What kind of assignment is this? tutorial tutorial How many times can you submit each answer box? 3 3 times 2. [MI2 7.P.11.alt1] 17/18 points Moving blocks connected by a spring Two identical 0.14 kg blocks (labeled 1 and 2) are initially at rest on a nearly frictionless surface, connected by an unstretched spring whose stiffness is 181 N/m, as shown in the upper diagram. Then a constant force of 10 N to the right is applied to block 2, and at a later time the blocks are in the new positions shown in the lower diagram. At this final time, the system is moving to the right and also vibrating, and the spring is stretched. MOTION OF THE CENTER OF MASS OF THE REAL SYSTEM What is the initial location of the center of mass of the real system? ,initial = .03 0.03 m What is the final location of the center of mass of the real system? ,final = .1 0.1 m How far did the center of mass of the real system move? = .07 0.07 m POINT PARTICLE SYSTEM What is the initial location of the point particle system? = .03 0.03 m What is the final location of the point particle system? = .1 0.1 m How far did the point particle system move? = .07 0.07 m In the point particle system, what was the distance through which the point of application of the force moved? distance = .07 0.07 m How much work was done on the point particle system? = .7 0.7 joules Check all the forms of energy that change in the point particle system during this process: translational kinetic energy spring potential energy vibrational kinetic energy rotational kinetic energy thermal energy What was the change in the translational kinetic energy of the point particle system?...
