Social Psychology Study Guide: Chapter 15 A definition of social psychology Social psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the way individuals’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by others. Conformity Conformity occurs when people yield to real or imagined social pressure. Facts about Asch’s conformity experiments In Asch’s conformity experiment, a group of people are in a room answering simple questions, with one person being the subject and all others saying the clearly wrong answer on purpose. The object is to try to see if the subject will conform to the wrong answer or if they will go for the right answer. Averaging across all 50 subjects, Asch found that the young men conformed on 37% of trials. Obedience Obedience is a form of compliance that occurs when people follow direct commands, usually from someone in a position of authority. Facts about Milgram obedience experiments In Miligram’s experiment, participants were a diverse collection of 40 men from the local community. The participants were always the “teacher” and an experimental accomplice was the “learner,” who was strapped into an electrified chair through which a shock could be delivered whenever he made a mistake on the task. The “teacher” was asked to administer the shock, and 26 out of 40 (65%) of subjects administered all 30 levels of shock. Definition of a group A group consists of two or more individuals who interact and are independent. Bystander effect With the bystander effect, people are less likely to provide needed help when they are in groups than when they are alone. Group polarization Group polarization occurs when group discussion strengthens a group’s dominant point of view and produces a shift toward a more extreme decision in that direction. Groupthink
