Chapter 6 A definition of learning Learning is any relatively permanent change in behavior or cognition (thinking, perception, and memory) as a result of practice or experience. Nature vs. nurture Classical (Pavlovian) conditioning Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which a stimulus acquires the capacity to evoke a response that was originally evoked by another stimulus. Unconditioned Response (UCR) The unconditioned response is an unlearned reaction to an unconditioned stimulus that occurs without previous conditioning. Conditioned Stimulus (CS) The conditioned stimulus is a previously neutral stimulus that has, through conditioning, acquired the capacity to evoke a conditioned response. Conditioned response (CR) The conditioned response is a learned reaction to a conditioned stimulus that occurs because of previous conditioning. How conditioned responses are learned Examples of conditioned responses Conditioning of emotional responses Extinction in classical conditioning Extinction occurs when the conditioned stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus are no longer paired and the response to the conditioned stimulus is weakened. Spontaneous recovery Spontaneous recovery is the reappearance of an extinguished response after a period of non-exposure to the conditioned stimulus. Generalization Generalization occurs when an organism that has learned a response to a specific stimulus responds in the same way to new stimuli that are similar to the original stimulus. Generalization is adaptive given that organisms rarely encounter the exact same stimulus more than once.
