Binet saw intelligence as an analog, and was interested in measurements in education early in his career. Operationalizing Operationalizing is deciding how to measure a construct. Alfred Binet Binet was asked to devise a test to identify mentally subnormal children. He created the first useful test of general mental ability. It expressed a child’s score in terms of “mental age.” Mental age A child’s mental age indicated that he or she displayed the mental ability typical of a child of that chronological (actual) age. Ratio IQ An intelligence quotient is a child’s mental age divided by chronological age, multiplied by 100. The Wechsler scales Wechsler’s IQ test introduced two major innovations. First, Wechsler made his test less dependent on subjects’ verbal ability than the Stanford-Binet. Second, he discarded the intelligence quotient in favor of a new scoring schedme based on the normal distribution. Deviation IQ Deviation IQ scores locate respondents precisely within the normal distribution. For most IQ tests, the mean of the distribution is set at 100 and the standard deviation is set at 15. Normal distribution The normal distribution is a symmetrical, bell-shaped curve that represents the pattern in which many characteristics are dispersed in the population. Reliability
