Ryan Aguirre RR #1 “Fieldwork on Prostitution in the Era of Aids” is a short article extracted from Claire E. Sterk’s ethnographic book, Tricking and Tripping . Though quite short in comparison to Sterk’s book, the article offers plenty of valuable insight into the lives of street prostitutes and the way outsiders may perceive them to be. As an anthropologist, Sterk conducted an ethnographic study of the lives of street prostitutes in New York City and Atlanta in an effort to better understand the lives of the women involved. As the article progresses, the reader is able to understand several key aspects of Sterk’s research including the reasons that women become prostitutes, the hardships and difficulties that many women face as prostitutes, and the level of emotional involvement that Sterk ultimately experiences as her work progresses. I found this article to be very interesting because the subject matter is certainly not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of ethnographic studies. As I read the article, one thing that
