Aim: To make Tincture of Iodine by extracting iodide from seaweed Focus Questions 1. A pharmaceutical product can be made from seaweed by heating the seaweed in boiling distilled water. The extract from the seaweed is taken and tests for iodine, iodide ions and Triiodide ions can be performed to see if the extract is a pharmaceutical product. 2. Yes, a single substance can be isolated from a mixture. The substance is Iodide. Procedure : 1. Gather six grams of seaweed, add water, and rinse out monosodium glutamate by stirring the seaweed. 2. Pour distilled water into beaker of seaweed and heat for five minutes. Stir occasionally. 3. Use a filtering setup to filter the extract from the seaweed. 4. Pour extract into clean beaker and add three iodine crystals. Proceed to crush with stirring rod and let sit for ten minutes. 5. Perform identification tests for iodine, iodide ion, and triiodide ion. 6.
