Taylor Collins Spectroscopic Identification of an Unknown Compound C10H12O3 Results: p-propoxybenzoic acid. Unsaturation Index: (2 * 10 –12)/2 +1= 5 degrees of unsaturation Interpretation of IR data: The broad stretch around 3300 is caused by the –OH group on the carboxylic acid. Plus, the spikes at 3000 and 1700 represent the whole carboxylic acid. There are aromatic overtones around 2500. The propoxy group is shown by the peaks around 1200. H-NMR Spectrum Analysis: There are six different proton peaks on my H-NMR data. 1 singlet bump around 10 ppm comes from the H off of the carboxylic acid. There are 2 doublets around 7-8 ppm both of which come from the hydrogens of the benzene ring which split each other. There is a triplet with a chemical shift around 4 ppm which accounts for the 2 hydrogens on the first carbon of the propoxy. They are split by the hydrogens of the middle carbon on the propoxy. The middle carbon is split by 5 hydrogens which causes a sextet shift around 1.9 ppm.
