Taylor Collins Lab Report 6: A Wittig Reaction Pre-lab and Observations : Attached Results : Taylor Collins (E,E)-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene CH-237, 006 2/26/09 Yield: Theoretical- 0.01mol*206.3grams per mols=2.063 grmas Actual- 0.2 grams Percent Recovery- (0.2/2.063)*100= 9.79% Melting Point Range: 148 C to 152 C IR Spectra: Attached. The spike around 3000-3100 indicates an alkene C double bond C stretch. The spike around 1500-1600 indicate aromatic C double bond C stretches and a little after 1600 there are waves that indicate aromatic overtones. HNMR Spectra: Attached. The five diferent H peaks are seen between about 6.6 and 7.6. All show spin-spin splitting due to the coupling of nearby nuclei. Discussion : The problem of this lab was that Marvelous Molecules Incorporated (MMI) has a large inventory of cinnamaldehyde it would like to reduce. They know that there is demand for novel dienes such as 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene which can be converted into other interesting products by means of a Diels-Alder reaction.
