Taylor Collins Lab Report 3: Bromination of Trans-Cinnamic Acid Pre-lab and Observations: Attached Results: Percent yield of dibromide: (2.22/3.08)*100= 72% Melting Point of dibromide: 195-200 degrees celcius Identification: erythro-2,3-dibromo-3-phenylpropanoic acid IR Data: OH = 2500-3500 cm -1 Alkane C-H = 2800-3000 cm -1 Aromatic C-H = 3000-3100 cm -1 The spikes at 3061 cm -1 and 3011 cm -1 represent the aromatic C-H bonds seen in the benzene in our product. Also, the spike at 2910 cm -1 represents the alkane C-H bonds in our product, which were formed by the bromination at the alkene. This spike would not have been a part of the IR data of our starting material. The spike at 1706 cm -1 represents the carbonyl group a part of our product. The –OH, or hydroxyl group, in our product is represented by the spike at about 3100 cm -1 . Lastly, the aromatic ring is represented by the spikes at 1960 cm -1 and 1886 cm -1 . There is large evidence in the IR spectrum that erythro-2,3-dibromo-phenylpropanoic acid was formed. Discussion:
