Taylor Collins Lab Report 1: Separation of Components of “Panacetin” Pre-Lab and Observations: Attached Results: The book tells us that Panacetin is composed of 10% sucrose, 40% aspirin, and 50% unknown component. The following are my results in comparison with the theoretical yield: .33 grams of sucrose recovered 2.19 grams of aspirin recovered 1.90 grams of the unknown recovered Composition of Panacetin: Sucrose: (.33/3.01)*100=10% Aspirin: (2.19/3.01)*100=72% Unknown: (1.90/3.01)*100=63% Discussion: The purpose of this experiment is to analyze the drug preparation of a component called “Panacetin” by finding out what percentages of aspirin, sucrose, and the unknown component it contains. The experiment proposes two questions. First; “is the composition of Panacetin as stated on the label accurate?” and second; “What is the identity of the unknown component in panacetin?”. The unknown component is believed to be either acetanilide or phenacetin; however we have not yet begun the lab to discover
