CLT Notes for Thursday, April 01, 2010: Fall of Troy; Nostoi (Homecomings) Troy The Fall of Troy Greeks sneak out at night Trojans drunken and sleep Greeks commit many outrages Priam murdered by Neoptolemus at the altar of Zeus [son of Achilles] Astyanax [Infant son of Hector thrown off the wall] Ajax the Lesser and Cassandra [Rapes her] Polyxena Helen and Menelaus Menelaus kills her Trojan husband [Not sure about this, confusing in my opinion] He is about to kill Helen herself, but she flashes her breasts at him, he drops his sword and she ends up going back home Aeneas escapes Was there really a Trojan War? Nine levels of historic Troy, beginning in 3000 BC. [level 7 is most likely the “little kernel of truth”, as in the actual city that the myth is based off of] Troy VII (1150 BC) mostly likely Homer’s Troy Crowded housing, stockpiles of food, other evidence of siege [on level 7 excavation] The story of Troy is not Homer’s (700BC), and even specific elements of it go back to the Late Bronze Age Classical Greeks didn’t doubt the historicity of the war Alexander at Troy (Shown: Picture of what Troy may have looked like) 191725 Agamemnon’s Return Nostoi – God’s revenge against Greek bad behavior Aeschylus’s Oresteia : the return of Agamemnon Only surviving trilogy of Greek tragedies Agamemnon The Libation Bearers The Eumenides Agamemnon Agamemnon returns from Troy with Cassandra, his prize [He had an easy voyage, no problems] She foresees their fate [Cassandra does, she has gift of foresight, nobody believes her
