Political and Social Upheaval March 19 th , 2010 I. National Causes (Nationalism) A. After Napoleon, the governments of Europe tried to restore the old system as much as was practicable. 1. It was not practicable to restore Germany or the Holy Roman Empire B. After Napoleon was gone, a lot of people sort of liked what Napoleon had done C. Groups/movements called for additional changes based on Nationalism 1. Germany- Burschenschaften: University fraternities that lobbied for the unification of Germany into a real state, and they wanted it to be Liberal. 2. Italy- Carbonari (“Charcoal- burners”): Started as a guerilla group against Napoleon. 3. Joseph Mazzini (1805-1872)- Young Italy: organization calling mainly for the unification of Italy. Made up of mostly University kids. D. Demonstrations for unification 1. 1817: German university students had a demonstration at Wartburg Castle (where Luther translated the bible) calling for the unification of Germany. 2. 1840: A war scare, German young people demanded that a united Germany
