Discussion The exchange of gases at the cellular level depends largely upon the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, and the physiological control mechanisms of the central nervous system. The assessment of respiratory functioning as a whole can be examined on the basis of airflow into and out of the lungs. Respiratory flow and volume were recorded with iWorks software, and were used to examine the volume of air in the lungs during various respiratory maneuvers.
