21:02 Clar 4/12/10 Urban case studies Nature of everything we looked at in Rome is imperial and upper class with huge  monuments and imperial fora -never saw houses. Or where people eat, or shops, or laundry. 2 problems:  -Rome is there, covered over the ancient material -have put an emphasis on the big monumental stuff -archaeology is biased to whether the temple is there or not to big stuff and  cant go into peoples basements. -but we have ancient writers who told us things.  -we know that there were 14 regions or neighborhoods, that augustus set out. -augustus bought his house from another elite. -each district has a separate character. Pompeii case study, have to move out of rome. -never built over bay of naples Herculaneum, mt Vesuvius. History: Samnites started the dominant grou form 5 th  cent to 1 st  cent BC City located at crosspoint of 4 major roads, economic base
