ASIA 150 10/1/09 Surrender of Japan Atomic Bomb -Little boy about 10ft long. -fat man Japanese Surrender -8/14/1945, broadcasted on the 15 th - S tart of the Allied Occupation -individuals were allowed one pound of clothes a year -food was rationed, caloric intake fell -could not survive, had to buy food on black market -early goal of occupation was to import food for Japanese -bombing had destroyed over 60 cities, so jap ecomony was at standstill General Douglas Macarther -Supreme commander in Japan -Felt a special affinity to Asia, thought he knew a lot about asia -Goals, make japan into a peaceful nation -Japan should never again be able to wage a war of aggression -Met with emperor Hirohito -should be leave gov’t in place, or eliminate gov’t and institute military rule? -decided to keep gov’t in place and rely on them to enact reforms what occupation would suggest. -Advantages: more likely to cooperate with reforms, occupying forces didn’t have to establish their own gov’t, and could implement
