1 Biology 210: Study guide for Midterm #2 Review: Cell Division: Which of the following results in Reduction and which results in Duplication ? -Mitosis -Meiosis Be prepared to draw and label the following for each phase of Mitosis and Meiosis: centromere, loci, homologous pairs, homologues, sister chromatids nonsister chromatids. Just concentrate on what is going on with the chromosomes. Be prepared to draw a mother cell with two sets of homologous chromosomes. Make sure each set has a different shape so you can follow each easily. Mark three loci: -two of which are linked and, -one which is unlinked from the others. -make at least one of the loci heterozygous and at least one homozygous. Reduction and recombination: Discuss the significance in terms of: -genetic diversity -how they relate to meiosis and fertilization Reproduction: What is the difference between asexual and sexual reproduction? Under what types of circumstances would each be advantageous? Under what types of conditions would each be a disadvantage? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Genetics: What types of crosses would you do to see if heritable traits are blended or past along discretely? Show the crosses (show the proof). What types of crosses would you do to see if two loci are linked or unlinked? Show the crosses (show the proof). Make sure you know all of the expected phenotypic rations from the different crosses we have learned. See the summary at the end of this study guide. Be prepared to show a cross that will help you determine an unknown genotype (distinguish between a true breeder and a hybrid).
