Plants Reading Questions (The Last Questions…) Name: Due: Friday, 4/24 Chapter 29 – Plant Diversity I 1. Describe an adaptation that has led to survival of plants in terrestrial environments. The resources needed for photosynthesis are: light carbon dioxide (above the ground), water and mineral nutrients (below the ground). Adaptations that led to this retrieval of essentials include the complex adaptation of roots and leaves bearing shoots. 2. How do scientists believe that alternation of generations evolved as a reproductive strategy? The diverse life cycles of the mayn animals appear to be variations on a comme ancestral cycle of alteration of generations. The plant kingdom is derived from a common ancestor, meaning it is monophyletic. Due to this, the many life cycles that are available originate from the reproductive adaptation of the various plant groups. 3. Describe several characteristics and examples of plants that are classified as bryophytes. Bryophytes are considered one of the first to move onto land through the embryophyte condition. Their gametes develop within gametangia. The male, antheridium, produces flagellated sperm. The female, archeonium, produces one egg. Most have no vascular tissue to carry water from the soil to the aerial parts of the plant. They lack the lignin-fortified tissue required to support tall plants on land 4. Describe several characteristics and examples of plants that are classified as tracheophytes (vascular plants). Most of their bodies are separated in subterranean root systems, which allows the absorption of water and minerals, and aerial shoot systems of stems and leaves, where photosynthesis is allowed. Vascualr tissues are also present, consisting of tubular chans of cell. 5.
