Chem 1C Experiment 18: Synthesis of Transition Metal Coordination Complexes Introduction: In this two week lab we synthesized and analyzed the  cis  and  trans  isomers  of [Co(en) 2 Cl 2 ]Cl. We also synthesized a similar substance, [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ]Cl 3  and  [Co(NH 3 ) 5 Cl]Cl . We analyzed the difference between the isomers and their  ligand strengths.  Part I: In this part of the lab we synthesized hexaamminecobalt(III)chloride. We  started with .991g of CoCl 2 *6H 2 O and combined it 1mL DI water, 3mL  ammonium hydroxide, .711g of ammonium chloride and 3mL hydrogen  peroxide to create (using charcoal as a catalyst) a reaction that yields water  and [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ]Cl :                           charcoal 2CoCl*6H 2 O + 2NH 4 Cl + 10NH 3  + H 2 O 2    2[Co(NH 3 ) 6 ]Cl + 14H 2 O Before the main reaction we added charcoal to catalyze the reaction and at  this point our mixture turned dark brown and we saw white precipitate  forming on the bottom. The actual reaction (once we added the hydrogen  peroxide) was exothermic and the reaction kept on going for about two
