Travis McPeak December 9, 2008 CECS 478 Homework #7 1. The tranquility principle is used t ensure that a subject doesn’t have its security level change in the middle of an operation. If it were allowed to change in mid-operation, it would allow for a subject to bypass the security the system implements. In a system without implementation of the tranquility principle, a subject can use a change from a higher level of security to a lower level to “write down” by simply retaining the information that it already has. 2. <top secret; dog> - No because the user can’t access anything at the top secret level. <secret; {dog}> - Yes, the user is cleared for the secret level and for the dog project. <secret; {dog, cow}> - No, the user has no need-to-know for cow. <secret; {moose}> - No, again, the user has no need-to-know for
