The country is in shambles from the civil war The main concern for Americans is reconstructing the nation South is mainly agrarian with little infrastructure The railroad system was divided north and south to separate the two opposing ideologies The south’s economy was extremely poor. Also since it was mostly agrarian money only came in seasonally Employees were not paid in cash, but they were given a place to live in company housing Yeomen – poor landless whites The north also was in need of repair after dedicating its resources to
