Ideas for Midterm Question 4 Thesis: Experiencing an economic crisis and the insatiable American appetite for economic success, the United States turned to imperialism as a means to establish new markets, spread religion, and become a world power. All three of which benefited the American people at the expense of other nations. Examples (from lecture): The U.S. claims Hawaii, Guam, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines as its protectorates Open door policy in Asia, warning all other imperial forces in the region that the U.S. will not tolerate interference in its commercial dealing with China. Roosevelt proclaims his Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. The U.S. will intervene in the domestic affairs of any country in the Americas and will exercise “international policing power” Construction of the Panama Canal, connecting the U.S.’s commercial and military interests in Atlantic and Pacific oceans U.S. Involvement in the Spanish-American war and gaining ownership of the Philippines gave the U.S. a foothold in Asia
