Thesis: Experiencing an economic crisis and the insatiable American appetite for economic success, the United States turned to imperial expansion as a means to establish new markets, spread religion, and become a world power. All three of these expansionist endeavors led to imperialism and benefited the American people at the expense of other nations. Point 1) establish New markets The nation’s large industrial manufacturing sector demanded new markets and a wider consumer base. The depression of 1893 raised fears that manufacturers would have to contend with surpluses of goods that Americans could not afford to buy (CE) By colonizing other nations the U.S. was able to expand its markets to new consumers. Open door policy in Asia, warning all other imperial forces in the region that the U.S. will not tolerate interference in its commercial dealing with China. (Lecture) U.S. Involvement in the Spanish-American war and gaining ownership of the Philippines gave the U.S. a foothold in Asia (lecture)
