Correlational Techniques Both statistics and research design Enables researcher to determine if a relationship  exists between two (or more) variables Gives information about how scores on variables  ‘relate’ to each other ~ as scores on 1 variable (X)  change is there a consistent pattern of change in 2 nd   variable (Y) Only statistic to use for “relationship” from a  parametric focus is a correlation
Types of Correlations  Pearson Product-Moment Parametric procedure Need interval or ratio data for both variables rp Involves hypothesis testing Spearman’s Rank-Order Non-parametric procedure At least one variable is ordinal to start ~ if the other variable  is I/R must convert to ordinal scale May involve hypothesis testing rs

Pearson Product-Moment Compares how consistently each value  of (Y) is paired with each value of (X) in  a linear fashion Theory: rp =  degree to which X and Y vary together             degree to which X and Y vary separately     Computational formula:
Pearson Product-Moment Question: Is there an association between hours of TV watched  per week and acting-out behaviour in preschoolers?

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.

Jill Tulane University ‘16, Course Hero Intern
