Political Science 1 Lecture #7 2/9/10 Why care about parties? Politicians need parties to get coordinated efforts to form legislative coalitions to win elections Parties reached out to the electorate, voters need parties (party label helps voters hold politicians accountable) Voters need the party label to give voters some sort of information There can’t be a large scale democracy without a competitive party system Why just two parties? About 40% fit into (fiscally liberal + social conservative) and (fiscally conservative + socially liberal) Electoral rules are the reason for just two parties, most elections are conducted in a single member district, plurality rule system (Duverger’s Law) o Single member district, plurality rules have just two political parties o Strategic voting leads to a two party system but enough people vote strategically to make it hard to win o Contrast to proportional representation (# of seats = # of votes) Reinforced by that the major parties copy the third party ideas
